Background

Based in Austin, Goodwill Central Texas partnered with Veryable in 2021 to help manage and reduce costs tied to donation storage and processing throughput. Facing growing backlogs during the pandemic, Goodwill saw an opportunity to not only lower monthly storage expenses but also capture additional revenue by moving more donated goods to the sales floor.

Traditional labor models couldn’t deliver the speed or flexibility required to handle these surges. Veryable’s on-demand labor platform became a crucial operational tool to clear backlogs, reduce expenses, and maximize revenue opportunities.

Challenges

Goodwill Central Texas faced extreme volatility in donation volumes and a highly unpredictable labor market during the pandemic. These combined pressures created serious operational bottlenecks and labor shortages.

As a result, donated goods sat unprocessed, delaying their sale and missing valuable revenue opportunities. Workforce gaps also triggered excessive overtime, burnout among staff, high turnover, and rising costs tied to recruiting and hiring.

To regain stability, Goodwill needed a flexible, scalable labor solution that could adapt instantly to demand shifts.

The Veryable Solution

Veryable’s on-demand labor marketplace provided Goodwill with unprecedented access, speed, and selectivity in sourcing workers. The platform connected Goodwill to thousands of local, vetted workers, allowing them to instantly scale labor capacity up or down without any cost to maintain idle workers.

By posting work opportunities to the Veryable marketplace, Goodwill tapped into a pool of more than 10k Operators in the Austin area. These workers could bid on daily or weekly jobs through their app, giving Goodwill the ability to select qualified Operators in real time using ratings, reviews, and work histories.

This approach empowered Goodwill to match capacity with unpredictable donation flow, paying only for the labor they actually needed — eliminating the risk of overstaffing, overtime, or missed sales opportunities.

Application

Recognizing that donation volumes would always fluctuate, Goodwill integrated Veryable’s on-demand model as a seamless extension of their existing workforce. During the height of the pandemic, Veryable Operators made up more than 50% of the workforce in their distribution centers. Today, Veryable still represents around 25%, providing ongoing flexibility and operational resilience.

Key work areas supported by Veryable Operators included:

  • Retail: backroom associates, material handling, loading/unloading
  • Outlets: bailing, material handling, loading/unloading
  • Project-based: after-hours trailer unloads, backroom clearing
  • Transportation: driver helpers, loading/unloading
  • Production: hanging clothes, tagging, pricing merchandise
