Intertech Products Up-Skills Their Supervisors and Enables Their Community with Flexible Labor
Intertech Products, Inc., based in rural North Manchester, Indiana, has built its reputation on serving the automotive, transportation, and industrial packaging industries with excellence. With core competencies in compression molding, die cutting, assembly, and extrusion coating/laminating, Intertech has maintained a strong, innovative culture to deliver timely and high-quality products.
Intertech’s customer base — particularly Tier 1 and OEM automotive suppliers — often experiences fluctuating production schedules that directly impact Intertech’s operations. Approximately 40% of their work serves the automotive industry, where demand swings are common. As Kathy Carney, HR Manager, explains, “Our schedule is dictated by what their schedule is. So we’ve had fluctuations where we’ve had to post more ops, and other times, we haven’t needed to post many at all.”
Prior to adopting Veryable, Intertech struggled with the challenges of day-to-day scheduling, a time-consuming recruiting process, and onboarding delays that made it difficult to respond to customer needs quickly. That changed in July 2022 when they partnered with Veryable, gaining a new level of flexibility across all three shifts.
“Recruiting took a majority of my time and pulled me away from other important projects,” Carney shared. “With Veryable, we were able to upskill our production supervisors. They know the schedules, they know when someone calls off, and they can approve, invite, and rate operators directly in the platform.”
By giving supervisors ownership of the labor scheduling process, Intertech empowered them to respond in real time to production swings. “It only takes a few minutes to post an op and get it filled,” said Carney. “That has taken a lot off HR’s plate and actually strengthened our relationship with the supervisors because they’re more involved with the workers they supervise.”
Intertech has seen the benefits firsthand. They have developed a reliable labor pool through Veryable, with several operators coming in regularly, as well as the ability to quickly invite new workers when needed. “We really like the flexibility for the operators too,” noted Carney. “They can work here one day, down the street the next, depending on what fits their schedule.”
With seven new product lines launching in 2023, Intertech’s team is confident they can take on new projects without fear of labor bottlenecks. “Veryable protects our core workforce and lets us build around that for the needs we have,” Carney added. “There’s nothing to lose, no risk. Why wouldn’t you want to use Veryable if you can get operators in and not have to burden your full-time team?”
Beyond their own walls, Intertech is also helping other manufacturers explore on-demand labor. Carney and her team have partnered with Grow Wabash County, a combined chamber and economic development group, to spread the word. “We’ve held meetings locally, then reached out to Huntington, to get people in the community involved in the Veryable program so they can fill gaps too,” Carney explained.
Ultimately, Veryable has allowed Intertech to stay ahead in a highly competitive market, protect their core workforce, and seamlessly scale up or down in line with customer needs. “If this is one of those links in the chain to help us get products out the door and to our customers,” Carney said, “then you absolutely want to consider it.”
